The Bow and the Brush
A meeting between music and Japanese calligraphy unfolds through the encounter of violinist Tedi Papavrami and Zen calligrapher Kanshô Miyashita. As Bach’s music fills the space, the bow and the brush move in parallel, transforming sound and gesture into a shared artistic language. Between silence, concentration and movement, the film explores the connection between two forms of expression rooted in discipline, intuition and the search for harmony.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY - Raphaëlle Régnier
Born in Nancy in 1964 and a dual Swiss and French citizen, Raphaëlle Régnier studied comparative literature, political science and social relations in Paris. She moved to Switzerland in 1988 and began her career as a print journalist at the daily *La Suisse*, joining Radio Télévision Suisse in 1992, where she still works today. Since 2001 she has been directing and producing documentaries independently, along with radio documentaries for France Culture and La Première. Her films are drawn to artists, and to places that impose their own terms: the pianist Alexandre Tharaud in *Le Temps dérobé* (2013), the winds of Ouessant in *Ouessant, au souffle du vent* (2017), already punctuated by the music of Bach. In 2018, *Ostinato* followed Tedi Papavrami — violinist, and translator of Ismail Kadare — into musical interpretation, where feeling and rigour meet. *The Bow and the Brush* grew out of that collaboration, and out of the conversations that followed.
