Carlo is a watchmaker, Gabriele a personal trainer. What binds them is a friendship built on exploration, risky attempts, and objects crafted from what others would throw away. Their goal is to navigate the Vjosa River, from its source in the Pindus Mountains in Greece to its mouth in Albania, facing rapids, unexpected challenges, and the limits of their own preparation. The Vjosa — with its furious rapids and its slow waters flowing toward the sea — becomes a mirror of their human journey.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY - Francesco Ubertalli
Francesco Ubertalli (Turin, Italy, 1994) is a filmmaker and director whose work focuses on documentary storytelling and real-life narratives. Since 2020, he has developed short films and documentary projects with Acid Rain Films, an audiovisual collective based in Turin. His documentary Nazareno Biondo, co-directed with Simone Coppola and currently in development, was selected for IDS Academy 2022, marking an important step in his development as a documentary filmmaker. In 2024, he travelled to Albania with Acid Rain to develop and produce Progetto Ulisse, a documentary about the Vjosa River and the relationship between its landscape, local communities and environmental challenges. The experience also marked the beginning of a new documentary project exploring environmental and social issues in the region. Alongside his documentary work, Francesco has worked as a director and assistant director on short films and feature film productions, further developing his approach to directing within both independent and professional film environments.
