Returning to Paris, his birthplace, a man (Riz Ahmed) moves through the memories of his past and surreal fragments of the present, searching to connect with his estranged father. On his journey, he meets a French Algerian woman (Souheila Yacoub) who welcomes him into her world. As intimacy grows, he is confronted with his shames and fears while exploring his lost Arab identity… Behind Paris is Algiers.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY - Yann Mounir Demange
Born in Paris and raised in London and of French Algerian heritage, Yann Mounir Demange has always been passionate about telling unexpected stories. Demange made a name for himself in the U.K. directing BAFTA-nominated series Dead Set (2008), and the entire first season of critically acclaimed multi-BAFTA-nominated series Top Boy (2011-2023), as well as his feature film debut ‘71 (2014), for which he received the British Independent Film Award for Best Director. Moving to work in the U.S., Demange most recently directed the feature film White Boy Rick (2018), and the pilot episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country (2020). He also served as an Executive Producer on Bassam Tariq's Mogul Mowgli (2020). Demange is directing the upcoming Marvel film, Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, as well as the episodic reimagining of Cronenberg’s Scanners for HBO.
