DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY - Teona Strugar Mitevska
Teona Strugar Mitevska was born in 1974 in Skopje, North Macedonia, into an artistic family. She began as a child actor and later trained as a painter and graphic designer before studying film at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. She made her directorial debut with the short film Veta (2001), which won a Special Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. Her feature films include How I Killed a Saint (2004), winner of the Tiger Award in Rotterdam; I Am from Titov Veles (2007), The Woman Who Brushed Off Her Tears (2012), When the Day Had No Name (2017), and God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya (2019), which premiered in Competition at Berlinale, winning the Ecumenical Prize and the Guild Film Prize, and receiving more than 20 international awards. Her film The Happiest Man in the World (2022) premiered in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival and was selected as North Macedonia's submission for the Academy Awards. Her latest feature, Mother (2025), starring Noomi Rapace, premiered in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival and received the Award for Best Artistic Contribution at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Mitevska is a co-founder of the production company SISTERS AND BROTHER MITEVSKI. In 2018, she was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. She works between North Macedonia and Belgium.
