Overview

Los Anarquistas
Art doesn’t change a fact and doesn’t have a political aim. Its only purpose is to show things as they are, focusing them in images that sometimes illustrate the tougher aspects. This is not a statement that can’t be changed, it’s just the artist’s Santiago Sierra’s opinion. The artist uses his art to criticize strongly without any romantic or revolutionary commitment. The themes that the artist chose and wanted to show in a natural way to the viewer are the irrational capitalist economy, politics and our unnatural social system. The artist uses photos, performances or videos to display reality’s anomalies that makes us addicted and attached to it. During the Christmas night at VOLUME! the artist performed “The Anarchists”, in which the space is a way to amplify his reflections about ambiguous contradictions of our religious or political statements. Eight disguised and paid anarchists listen to the midnight’s mass, analyzing the church’s structure. They show how much churches are linked to their past advantages and the utopic political and commercialized faith. Sierra demonstrates the actual inconsistency and unsuitability of both sacred and profane things.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY - Santiago Sierra
The work of Santiago Sierra has been characterized by showing situations where survival is a fundamental element. He translates into artistic practice the inhuman aspects of the economic system, the mechanisms of corruption and the labor exploitation of the individual. He links several references with direct reality to explore and represent the world articulating even a critical stance before the own relations of the art world and its agents. In the nineties his projects by lui became known for establishing systems of negotiation with third parties to carry out actions -generally occupying a public space- to demonstrate the materialistic procedures related to the systemic violence of capitalism and the working conditions that are generated from it. This body of work has questioned the functioning of institutional structures, control over the public space, the emergence of informal architectures in the urban landscape associated with forms of survival; the conditions of disuse and disposal not only from the point of view of the material but also applied to individuals as a reflection of social contrasts.
