Tirana International Film Festival 2024
The 22nd edition of Tirana International Film Festival – Oscar® & European Film Awards qualifying will be held from September 22-28, 2024.
The Best Short Film will be eligible for the Oscars® 2024 as well as the European Film Awards 2023. Student films officially selected at TIFF are eligible to compete for Student Academy® Awards (SAA).
Since 2013, TIFF is also part of the 110 most important festivals in the world, which are followed with special attention online, but also physically by the HFPA – Hollywood Foreign Press Associations.
TIFF’s Daily Program combines 200 film premieres in competition across all categories and genres. This year’s calendar has been enriched with an exclusive special program.
The Galà Opening Ceremony will be organized at 18:00 at the Millenium Cinema. We have the pleasure of hosting 40 members of ICDA – International Casting Directors Association, as part of the award ceremony for the first time in Albania of ICDA’s Semiramis Award for Excellence in Casting, to recognise outstanding achievements in casting. The ICDA’s purpose in creating this award was to shine a light on the pivotal role that casting directors play in the creative process of filmmaking.
After the Ceremony this 22nd edition of TIFF will officially open with the film Parthenope, which had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival by Paolo Sorrentino, winner of the Oscar, Golden Globes, BAFTA, 4 European Film Awards and 9 David di Donatello awards.
RetrospectTIFF
Tribute to Marcello Mastroianni, one of the greatest actors of all time. On the 100th anniversary of his birth, we will screen a special program:
- 8 e Mezzo by Federico Fellini
- La Dolce Vita by Federico Fellini
- Che ora è by Ettore Scola
- Io, Io, Io e gli Altri by Alessandro Blasetti
TIFF Classics
The world premiere of the acclaimed film KAPEDANI (The Captain) restored in 4K will have its exclusive screening during TIFF at the Millennium Cinema. The most successful comedy of Albanian cinematography still remains a reference for all generations.
SPECIAL SCREENINGS
The Network of Festivals in the Adriatic Region Tirana International
Film Festival is now part of The Network of Festivals in the Adriatic Region, that is the joint program of three founding festivals – the Sarajevo Film Festival (BiH), Auteur Film Festival (Serbia), and Zagreb Film Festival (Croatia), with associate members Ljubljana International Film Festival (Slovenia) Manaki Brothers Film Festival (North Macedonia) and Adriatic Audience Award ambassadors Herceg Novi Film Festival (Montenegro) and Pesaro Film Festival (Italy).
Each of the eight festivals holds a special joint program, while the best films will be chosen by audiences from all five countries. By tallying audience votes, the best film will be honoured with the Adriatic Audience Award, presented to the winner at the Auteur Film Festival in Belgrade.
Kosova’s Young Film Talents
Special program with short films from the most outstanding students of the Faculty of Arts, Film Directing branch over the last 4 years as well as Master’s students, a program which was just presented at the Cannes 2024.
Oscar® Shorts 2024 & EFA Shorts Tour 2023
For several editions, it has become a tradition to bring every year to the audience the 5 Best Short Film nominations for the Academy® Award, as well as the 5 best European films nominated for the Best European Short Film.
INDUSTRY EVENTS
3rd SCREENPLAY ContesTIFF 2024
aims to evaluate from our partner producers and distributors the best and most likely screenplay to be produced by them with the greatest chances of successful distribution in the most important international short film festivals. Our partners have nominated 10 scripts for Pitching and at the Awards Ceremony, September 28, 2024, they will reward the winning scripts with the Distribution Award and the possibility of signing a production or distribution contract with the winners.
“REGIONAL TALENT – VITAL TO ATTRACT INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS”
Panel-Discussion and Q&A with the panelists in partnership with ICDA – International Casting Directors Association, Spotlight and Filmmakers Europe, will explore the essential role of local talent in attracting international film projects. This session will explore the importance of collaboration between regional and global creatives. Gain valuable insights from industry experts dedicated to enhancing the film landscape and fostering cultural exchange.
AI – PANEL DISCUSSION
TIFF 2024 introduces, for the first time, a program featuring films created with AI. As part of this innovation, a Panel Discussion will be held with experts from the fields of film and creative industries, innovation and technology, as well as literature and philosophy from Albania and the Europe.
“RESTORATION OF FILM HERITAGE BETWEEN CHALLENGES AND NECESSITY”
The panel will be led by Mrs. Marinela Ndria, director of the Central State Film Archive. Main speaker: Professor Nicola Barbuti, scientific researcher in the field of archival, bibliographic and librarianship at the Department of Humanistic Research and Innovation, “Aldo Moro” State University, Bari (Italy). Founder and current director of the DABIMUS Center for Digitization of Archives, Libraries and Museums.
MASTERCLASSES
EXPERIMENTAL AND PERSONAL FILMMAKING
Masterclass by Rouzbeh Rashidi, founder of Experimental Film School, Iran-Ireland.
BRIDGING EDUCATION AND THE FILM INDUSTRY
Promotion of the successful experience of the film directing branch in an open meeting with students, Albanian and foreign filmmakers in the presence of Mr. Hazir Sh. Haziri, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Mr. Ismet Sijarina, Head of the Film & TV Department Faculty of Arts, University of Prishtina, as well as students from Kosovo present at the festival.
PANORAMA
with thematic and alternative sections such as GENERATIONs, NEW WORLD, DIVERGENT MINDs, PARADE and Reflecting Albania, and for the first time we will bring a program of films created with AI accompanied by discussions and debates about this new audiovisual alternative. For the third time the PANORAMA section will be in competition and the jury will be composed of representatives of our institutional and media partners.
KIDs Program
is an annual program dedicated to children from 5-10 and 11+ years old with 36 short films. The “Tonin Harapi” Hall of the Artistic High School will be available for this program where the winners will be chosen by the children’s votes. This edition KIDs program will be enriched with a special section called TEENs, with narrative films created especially for this delicate age.
COMPETITION & JURY
The official competition consists of feature films: Feature, PerspecTIFF, Documentary and Short Films: Live Action, Animation, Documentary, Video Art & Experimental, Students, Balkan shorts as well as In ALBANIAn.
These films will be evaluated by 6 international juries formed by personalities of the cinematographic industry, such as: Hu Wei, director (China, France – AMPAS member), Mónica Santos, director (Portugal – AMPAS member), Goran Gocić, critic, journalist and writer (Serbia), Thanasis Neofotistos, director (Greece), Rouzbeh Rashidi, director (Iran, Ireland), Hazir Sh. Haziri, director (Kosova), Tonia Mishiali, director (Cyprus), Goce Cvetanovski, director (North Macedonia), Otilia Babara, director (Moldova), Anja Dihrberg-Siebler, Casting director (Germany), Sofia Georgovassili, director (Greece), Ardit Sadiku, filmmaker (Albania), Bruno Carnide, director (Portugal), Adam Selo, distributor, (Italy) and Dritan Huqi, producer (Albania).
Also, this year, for the first time, we will create a special jury formed by students of the University of Arts, who, in addition to evaluating the films selected in the official competition, will be active after each film screening in the cinema with Q&A, thus encouraging critical thinking among young filmmakers and giving them the opportunity to get to know and collaborate with foreign directors and producers participating in TIFF.
The Awards Closing Ceremony will be held on September 28, at 20:00 at the Millenium Cinema.
VENUES
The films and events of this edition will be screened in the Millenium Cinema, AGIMI Art Center, the Hall “Tonin Harapi” near the Artistic High School, Maks Velo cinema as well as online for the many followers who cannot attend and travel freely in Albania.
SUBMISSIONS & SELECTIONS STATISTICS
On online platforms, we registered about 3,700 films and 67 scripts, which submited this year from 115 countries around the world. After a long work of several months, the group of selectors has suggested for this 22nd edition of TIFF 2024 about 220 films in total along with the 10 screenplays selected for the 3rd Screenplay ContesTIFF. 30 feature films and 185 short films from 61 countries around the world will be shown.
